What is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

CO2 laser resurfacing is an ablative procedure that treats deep wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage, and overall tone by removing the outer layers of damaged skin and heating the underlying dermis. Using controlled laser energy to remove microscopic areas of damaged skin, the skin's natural repair and collagen remodeling process is stimulated. This process triggers intensive collagen production that results in tighter, smoother skin as it heals.

We know that sounds intense, but it doesn't have to be.

The SmartXide Tetra takes CO2 technology even further by allowing us to completely customize the depth, intensity, and energy delivered during treatment based on your skin and what you're hoping to accomplish. Not every CO2 treatment will look the same. Our providers create individual treatment plans based on both the correction you want and the recovery time you're willing to have.

What does a CO2 laser treat?

CO2 laser resurfacing and CoolPeel can treat a variety of common aesthetic skin complaints with the ability to tailor the treatment intensity specifically to you.

Grace Medical Aesthetics can use the SmartXide Tetra CO2 to customize a deeper, more aggressive CO2 treatment for those looking to address:

  • Significant sun damage

  • Deeper lines and wrinkles

  • Skin laxity

  • Heavy texture or scarring

  • Visible signs of aging

More aggressive CO2 treatments can produce more dramatic results, but they also come with more downtime. Additionally, patients with darker skin tones or those prone to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) may not be candidates for more aggressive CO2 treatments.

What is CoolPeel?

CoolPeel is a specialized fractional CO2 treatment and a lighter approach to CO2 resurfacing performed with the SmartXide Tetra. It uses a short, high-powered pulse of CO2 energy to target the more superficial layers of the skin while limiting unnecessary heat to the surrounding tissue. This allows us to harness the skin-renewing benefits of CO2 with a more comfortable treatment and significantly less downtime than traditional CO2 resurfacing.

CoolPeel is especially great for a wide range of skin tones and can work to improve overall skin texture, dullness, early fine lines, mild sun damage, and mild acne scars with only a day or two of light downtime. And better yet, when CoolPeel is performed as a series spaced out over time, results can build gradually while allowing patients to maintain a more manageable recovery after each treatment.

CoolPeel can be a great option for those of all skin tones looking to address:

  • Mild sun damage

  • Mild acne scars

  • Fine lines

  • Dullness

  • Overall skin texture

How much downtime with a CO2 laser treatment?

This might be the most important question to ask when you're considering a CO2 laser treatment and honestly, it depends entirely on your treatment plan.

One of the biggest advantages (and our favorite feature) of the SmartXide Tetra is the ability to completely customize treatment intensity.

The stronger the treatment, the more important it becomes to plan for your recovery appropriately. With a more intensive CO2 resurfacing treatment, you can expect:

  • Redness, swelling, dryness

  • Peeling, flaking, or scabbing

  • Visible downtime for several days or weeks, depending on treatment intensity

  • Daily at home aftercare instructions for several days, depending on treatment intensity

  • Very little to no sun exposure while healing

A lighter CoolPeel treatment carries a much more manageable recovery. Visible downtime is typically limited to a day or two of:

  • Mild redness

  • Warmth or sensitivity

  • Dryness or rough sandpaper-like texture

  • Mild swelling

During your consultation, we'll discuss not only what results you want, but also what level of downtime best suits your lifestyle and what your post-treatment care will look like. Your normal routine, upcoming social events, and how comfortable you are with visible downtime are all things we factor into your treatment plan to determine what intensity will be right for you.

What does a CO2 laser treatment feel like?

Your experience will vary depending on the intensity of your CO2 treatment and the area being treated. Before your procedure, your provider will review with you your customized treatment plan, what to expect during the appointment, and what to expect post-treatment.

No matter the intensity or area treated, a strong numbing cream will be applied to the area. Grace Medical Aesthetics also offers Pro-Nox, which is self administered nitrous oxide, to help with both pain and anxiety during treatment.

During treatment, you may feel warmth, heat, or a prickling sensation as the laser passes across the skin. After treatment, the skin may feel warm or similar to a sunburn. More intensive treatments typically create a more noticeable post-treatment response than a lighter CoolPeel treatment and these feelings may intensify and last for a few hours as prior comfort measures begin to wear off.

When will I see results from a CO2 laser treatment or CoolPeel?

Your skin begins its healing and renewal process after treatment, but CO2 results are not limited to what you see immediately after recovery. As the skin heals and collagen production continues, improvements in texture, tone, and overall skin quality will continue developing over the following weeks and months.

The timeline varies based on your treatment intensity, the area treated, your skin, your age, your healing response, compliance in aftercare instructions, and whether you've received one treatment or a series of treatments.

A lighter treatment plan may involve multiple sessions to achieve the results you're looking for, while a more intensive CO2 laser resurfacing treatment may be designed to accomplish more in a single session. Your provider will recommend a treatment schedule during your consultation.

What areas can be treated with a CO2 laser?

The face is one of the most common areas for CO2 laser resurfacing. We typically suggest treating your neck and décolletage along with the face whenever possible. Other common treatment areas include a heavier focus around the eyes and mouth, or the back of the hands. Treatment can also be considered for other areas depending on your concerns and candidacy.

CO2 Laser for Acne Scars

Acne Scar Treatment in Westchester County

Acne scars often involve changes below the surface of the skin, which is why skincare products alone are typically not enough to significantly improve their appearance. Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing creates controlled treatment zones within the skin that encourage repair and collagen remodeling.

Depending on the type and severity of your acne scars, your Grace Medical Aesthetics provider may recommend:

Not every acne scar should be treated the same way. During your consultation in Bedford Hills, or any of our other office locations, we'll evaluate the type of scarring you have and help determine which treatment offers the best balance between improvement and downtime.

Is CO2 Laser right for me?

You may be a candidate for CO2 laser resurfacing if you're looking to improve concerns such as skin texture, fine or deep lines, acne scarring, sun damage, or overall skin quality and are comfortable with the recovery associated with your recommended treatment.

CO2 is not automatically appropriate for every patient, every skin tone, or every skin concern. CoolPeel may be a more appropriate CO2 treatment choice for those with darker skin tones or those looking for a more manageable recovery. That's why a complimentary consultation is required before scheduling any CO2 treatment at our Bedford Hills office.

Your Grace Medical Aesthetics provider will come up with a custom treatment plan for you based on:

  • Your skin type and current skin condition

  • Your risk of hyper- or hypo-pigmentation

  • Medical history

  • Previous aesthetic treatments

  • Current skincare routine

  • Recent sun exposure

  • Treatment goals

  • Downtime expectations

From there, we'll determine whether your ideal treatment is a lighter CoolPeel, an intensive CO2 resurfacing treatment, or customized treatment somewhere in between. And if another treatment is better suited to your skin, we can talk through those options too.

CO2 resurfacing or CoolPeel treatment may be one part of a larger skin maintenance plan. Grace Medical Aesthetics Facial Members receive benefits on eligible skincare services, including special savings on CO2 laser treatments. Your provider can help you decide how treatments such as IPL, DiamondGlow, Microneedling, and more can work together for your goals.
